 "I address you in a jail cell all alone, Â" he wrote.  "Three days ago I lost my mother to cancer. I was to think about ending my life … but when I found your name and address in a newspaper uses felt as if this was the answer to my cry of Help. "
Deeply touched, I put the letter. I felt genuine empathy for Jack in this, his moment of grief and loneliness. It was mid November when he received the letter arrived.
He even wrote,  "I hope you are the kind of people my mom always spoke very highly of me. Share my name on the church, hoping to receive from me the desire for a holiday. I would have at least one Christmas card … MoMA my card would have been the only received. "
Jacka As I continued to fall in solitude I read more.  "It breaks my heart to know that while other men are opening their many greeting cards Christmas and open their prison JC Penny catalog order IÂ'll remain standing alone. Mom could not afford a Christmas package, so wonÂ't hurt so much, but in order to have a nice Christmas card and communion with the people of my mother always believed in doubt put a smile on this sad face. "
Stirred to action, not waste time. I emailed my family and friends a copy of the letter asking them to Jacka send a Christmas card. So I contacted an associate pastor at my church and asked to have adult Bible fellowship classes collecting signatures and greetings members.
I felt good. Said. Prison Ministry is important that reminded me of myself.
There are thousands of men and women in prison on today looking for friendship. Many of these prisoners feel like social pariahs. They are isolated from family and friends. Prisoners love to receive mail.
This is usually difficult and often impossible for prisoners to find friendship among the prison population. Many inmates have registered for penpals in the websites. Yahoo lists about 30,000, and Google has more than 35,000 sites listed. A single site registered one million hits in 2001.
Prison Fellowship Ministries has an exchange program that matches Pen sentenced to Christian volunteers. This is a Prison Pen Pal site for inmates who need a caring friend.
This site and others like him attempt to bring friendship and hope to prisoners alone. The programs try to help alleviate the loneliness of the prison. I have read that ninety cent of prisoners lose contact with her family and friends after 3 years. Soon feel the loss of dignity, self-esteem and self-respect. A letter or card a pen pal can lift your spirits.
Jacka letters continued to come. He talked about the thrill of receiving a few cards and letters in response my be your friend. He shared how delighted he was to receive the Bible and some lessons from the Bible that had sent him. Near the end of one of his letters to be disturbed. Jack wrote, "My feet are old and I Dona't own coat. These are the cold winters in the mountains of Cumberland. I say up here to get a pair of Timberland boots. "Jack was to give specific information about the cost of boots and detailed instructions for the money.
My niece, Jenny, had written to Jack.  "Sorry to hear of the loss of his mother. I just lost my father a month ago, so I think I know at least some of the penalties feeling. "
The reason for my concern about Jack's request was the cold of winter in the mountains of Cumberland, but the that had been used in the promotion of a "game with him." Jenny's letter included the same request I made for a "Timberland Boots, 31,052 C number, size 9, tan, and a hooded coat, 94271BÂ number.
I later learned that a church family had received the request as well. I felt embarrassed and betrayed. I was ashamed that I had brought in. had been scammed by a cona … or had I?
When you become a pen pal prison is important that you be alert to scams known. You should be aware that the institutions provide all the basic needs of an inmate. Even educational programs are often freedom of prisoners. If an inmate is requesting a donation of something that seems unusual, contact the prison administration before sending money.
Many people never consider writing a prisoner. If you find someone to would like to write, Dona't dude. Most are honest about what they are looking, however, utilize the wisdom and common sense as you would with anyone outside. Most inmates are alone and desperately needs a new friend. Most expect the transition back to productive life after prison. Their friendship can be a positive influence.
When responding to the request didnÂ't Jacka, he stopped writing. That there learned a good lesson early. Since then I have had correspondence with many of the individual prisoners. My experience has been good. I hope I have been very helpful and encouragement to the prisoners. However, I often think Jack and I wonder if they ever bought the Timberland boots and winter coat with hood, for walks in cold in the courtyard behind the prison walls of Cumberland, Maryland.
